Clams Casino produced every rap song you’re obsessed with

Over the course of the past decade, New Jersey’s Clams Casino has redefined what hip-hop should sound like. You see, before Soundcloud rap, there was cloud rap: a simpler genre from a simpler time, before Xanax clams casino producer rife and when sample-heavy ethereal music was all anybody needed. After self-releasing the first in a series of now cult instrumental mixtapes back inClams casino producer Casino was integral in taking the genre to the mainstream. Developing his signature minimalistic yet psychedelic production and blessing only the most deserving acts with it, the rest of the s has brought collaborations with the likes of Lil B (they met on Myspace), Mac Miller, Kelela, The Weeknd, FKA Twigs, Joji, Lil Peep, Flohio and -- perhaps most iconically -- A$AP Rocky.

Having just released his first album in three years -- Moon Trip Radio, a sonic return to his Instrumentals era after a period of vocal-led projects -- we thought it only right to ask Clammy Clams to get reflective and Royal Panda Casino €25000 Tournament down the stories behind his favourite productions, and in doing so, reveal the magic formula that goes into his work. Here goes

Vince Staples -- Norf Norf
“This one was a rare case for me because it only took about 15 minutes or so to make. The main sound is a hardware synth through some guitar pedals clams casino producer I recorded at my favourite studio in LA -- The Ship -- when I was working on my own project. I wasn't really making too many beats out there though, I was mostly just recording sounds and samples to flip when I got back home to my own studio. When I got back to my apartment in New Jersey some time after that, I pulled clams casino producer this long recording of the samples I made in LA and listened through. That little part immediately stuck out to me and I started from there. The drum programming is kind of funny because I was really just throwing in random samples without thinking about the sounds or where they would go, so that part is super sporadic I was just having fun with it. It came together really quickly and naturally, clams casino producer, without much thought at all, which is how I knew it was a special one, clams casino producer. It felt like it kind of just happened King Billy Casino Bonuses its own. I played it for Vince at the studio after we finished recording "All Nite" for my album, and after only about a minute of listening he was like, ‘Ok, I've got a hook for this.’”

Clams Casino -- In A Mirror
“This is a track off of my new album that had an interesting start because it was originally made for a ballet. My cousin Stephen Petronio is a choreographer and asked me if I wanted to score one of his dances at the Joyce Theatre in NYC. It had to be a single piece of music about minutes long, clams casino producer. I was nervous because it was the first time I had done anything like that, clams casino producer, but I was excited for the challenge and to see where it would take me. We worked on that back and forth for a few months -- I would send a bunch of musical ideas and he would listen and try clams casino producer out with the dancers, then give me feedback on what was working and what wasn't. I used to go to the rehearsals from time to time to see how it was all coming along. This track was taken from somewhere in the middle of that ballet piece (named “Locomotor”) that I made in The piano was recorded at my mom's house -- you can hear her pet birds in the background. The space and tension and clams casino producer of this track seemed to fit perfectly with all of the other newer music I was doing for my latest project so I brought clams casino producer back out for Moon Trip Radio.”

A$AP Rocky -- LVL
“This beat was made in summer It was the first time I ever went to L.A. As clams casino producer as I touched down I saw a message saying that someone from Drake's camp was reaching out for beats, but not long before that trip my computer crashed and it wiped out all the sessions and sounds I had worked on and saved up for about the last four years. I didn't have much to work with and wasn't fully up and running yet. I started looking through old beats I had made and started trying to sample parts of them. This beat actually just sampled a piece of another beat I had made a year or so before. I sent it out to Drake and he held it for a while but then never ended up using it, so I played it for Rocky when we were working on his first album. Most of my favourite beats that I make are very minimal and have no more than clams casino producer sounds in them, like this one -- kick, snare, clap, sample, bass.”

Lil B -- Realist Alive
“The sample on this is “Hometown Glory” by Adele. This was an important one because it was kind of a transitioning point where I can hear that I was pushing myself, trying to switch up and add new sequences back to back and really get more in depth in the arrangement. I was clams casino producer to break out of the more normal and basic hip-hop beat loop zone that I was feeling stuck in.”

Clams Casino -- Cupidwing
“This came out of a typical process for me, clams casino producer, which is pulling elements from three or four unfinished beats together into one. The oldest part is the little vocal chops that I took from a beat from seven years earlier. All the synths are taken from a long freestyle recording I did on a Prophet synth. I tried to get people on it for a while until I realised that maybe it’s just supposed to be left instrumental.”

New Jersey-based producer Clams Casino's instantly recognizable sound, fusing sludgy, blown-out beats with hazy, nearly shoegaze-like distortion and haunting, clams casino producer samples, almost singlehandedly spawned the cloud rap subgenre. With ‘32 Levels,’ producer Clams Casino steps out of the ‘cloud rap’ pack Reign of Dragons Slots Machine Casino doesn’t expect listeners to notice all the work he puts into creating his woozy, intricately pm casino music. In fact, he sort of hopes they don’t.

“To me, the best-case scenario is when someone likes it without knowing why,” said the year-old producer known for collaborations with adventurous hip-hop and R&B artists like ASAP Rocky, Vince Staples and FKA twigs. “They can tell something is different, but they’re not sure what.”

A prime example of what’s been called “cloud rap,” his signature sound — which blends dreamy instrumental textures with hard-knocking beats — has helped distinguish songs such as Rocky’s gloomy but pretty “LVL” and “I’m God,” a viral hit by the Bay Area rapper Lil B that’s built around an unlikely Imogen Heap sample (and has more than 2 million plays on YouTube).

Now Clams Casino is extending that deceptively complex approach on “32 Levels,” his full-length solo debut after an earlier EP clams casino producer several mixtapes. Due Friday, it features guests including Staples, Rocky and Mikky Ekko in songs that introduce clear pop hooks to his meticulous productions.

In “Back to You” he layers the winsome sigh of Kelly Zutrau (of the indie-R&B trio Wet) over a skipping groove, clams casino producer, while “A Breath Away,” with the Los Angeles-based future-soul singer Kelela, suggests an artier version of Janet Jackson circa “The Velvet Rope.” There’s even what amounts to a space-age torch song, “Ghost in a Kiss,” featuring Samuel T. Herring of Future Clams casino producer it’s accessible at the same time that it’s challenging people,” said Clams Casino, who will mark the album’s release Thursday evening with a sold-out performance at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever cemetery.

“I’m trying to push things forward,” he added, “but kind of sneaking it in.”

Born Michael Volpe, the producer started making beats as a pastime while he was training to become a physical therapist in New Jersey. Music eventually took over, though, and by he was working with the high-profile likes of Blood Orange and the Weeknd. He also began traveling to L.A. several times a year, eager to get in on the freelance songwriting and production work that goes on here. (One of his more unlikely credits might be Pia Mia’s “Fight for You,” a thumping pop number from the teen-dystopia film “Divergent.”)

With “32 Levels,” whose title borrows a phrase from “I’m God,” Clams Casino’s goal was “just being able to do what I wanted to do,” he said. Today most hip-hop and pop records are made by committee, with an artist (and his or her team) soliciting tracks from any number of studio wizards, each of whom is expected to conform to some degree to the project’s Turbo Reel Slots Machine vibe.

“A lot of people can have a say in what ends up coming out,” Clams Casino said. “For this I was attracted to the idea of having control over everything creatively, where I clams casino producer have to compromise.”

He’s not the only producer to step out on his own lately. You can see traces of the same ambition in work by such serial collaborators as Diplo and DJ Snake. And like DJ Shadow, a master of sampling who built many of the sounds on his new album from scratch, Clams Casino relied less on sampling for “32 Levels” than he did in his earlier work; instead of hunting online for source material, he recorded himself playing drums and other instruments, then used software to manipulate the recordings.

You can tell he’s proud of his work too: “32 Levels” comes with instrumental versions of each of its dozen tracks, clams casino producer the better to appreciate the spooky ambient sounds floating beneath Staples’ rapping in “All Nite.”

True to his retiring nature, though, Clams Casino insisted he wasn’t trying to prove anything about his abilities by favoring original sounds over samples. His real motivation, he admitted with a laugh, was steering clear of the potential legal troubles that can arise when sampling copyrighted work.

“It was more like, ‘How can I do this without having lawyers come after me?’”

How Superproducer Clams Casino Became a Star Without the Spotlight

Read enough interviews with hip-hop producers (or the rappers who use their work) and you&#x;ll come to understand that successfully selling a beat is often a numbers game &#x; and that volume wins. Take the five beats a day x three summers regimen mapped out by Kanye West on his song Spaceship ; Drake producer Frank Dukes and his self-made Kingsway Music Library, a massive collection of affordable original music for other beatmakers to sample; or the catalog of beats Atlanta hotshot Mike WiLL Made-It has created (enough that Mike could lock you in a studio for five days and not play the same beat twice, according to Miley Cyrus). The most prolific producer usually wins the day.

Mike Volpe, who produces and releases music as Clams Casino, is taking the less-traveled path. If Mike WiLL could last hours in the studio, playing through endless beats for an MC to jump on, Volpe would last maybe 12 minutes. And yet he&#x;s helped shape the sound of some of the most talked about artists in rap today, from to now, from Lil B to A$AP Rocky to Vince Staples.

I have a few things at a time that I'm happy with, Volpe, clams casino producer, says. I&#x;ll go clams casino producer the studio with a rapper and I'm like, I have four beats&#x;that&#x;s it! Other producers will have 50 beats stocked up and they&#x;ll play them with the rapper going, &#x;Next. Arctic Treasure Slots Machine I&#x;ve learned from going to a bunch of sessions that there&#x;s usually no point for me to be there.

“I’m not interested in being personally captain cooks casino review, but for the music to be in the spotlight, sometimes I have to be, too.”

So Volpe prefers email to working in the studio. In May &#x;the year he says music became full-time &#x;Volpe sent just four beats to a young local rapper, clams casino producer. (Volpe was raised in New Jersey and resides there still, in Bergen County.) One in particular jumped out at the MC&#x;the song that later came to be known as Wassup"&#x;marking the first exchange in a fruitful relationship between Volpe and Rakim Mayers, clams casino producer, a.k.a. A$AP Rocky.

I used to check [the late A$AP Yams&#x; now-defunct website REALNIGGATUMBLR] because I liked the old pictures from rap magazines and the funny captions, Volpe recalls. He posted Rocky&#x;s stuff and I hit Yams up. He responded like, &#x;We were just talking about your mixtape last night!&#x;

At this point, Rocky was living in Jersey and had already recorded a version of Demons to the Numb beat from Volpe&#x;s first instrumental mixtape, which he&#x;d released in March of that year. He lived minutes away from me, Volpe says. He&#x;d record at Ishlab studio in Brooklyn, and then I&#x;d go to his house and he&#x;d play [what he&#x;d recorded]. I remember listening to clams casino producer for the first time at his house. I&#x;d go every couple weeks to listen to stuff.

Rocky released his debut mixtape, www.enthralaviation.comA$AP, that October; with five credits, Volpe contributed more beats to the project than any other producer. The signature Clams Casino vocal samples, which sound like ghost speech recorded at quarter speed, haunt the record and provide a warped companion to Rocky&#x;s Houston-inspired DJ Screw allusions. Even more so than the beats he&#x;d placed with Lil B in andthis was Volpe&#x;s coming out clams casino producer keeping with his preference for the background, he didn&#x;t immediately make a play for a consumer-facing star turn, with a debut album&#x;until now. Sitting on the couch in a white-walled back room at Downtown Music Studios, in SoHo, Volpe explains that, yes, that&#x;s him on the cover of his debut album, 32 Levels. His knit brow, made more prominent by his shaved dome and full beard, suggests that he&#x;s mildly annoyed by the question, but his tone is even and calm&#x;even when he&#x;s explaining that he doesn&#x;t want to discuss a particular topic further. (At various points in the interview he declined to comment on Yams' death, the Black Lives Matter movement, and more.) He&#x;s quick to acknowledge that many of his fans have asked about the figure in the hooded high-fashion black leather coat as well. Back to the camera, the album cover star you can&#x;t recognize.

32 Levels, clams casino producer, released July 15 on Columbia Records, features appearances from long-time collaborators like A$AP Rocky and Lil B and new friends like Vince Staples and Kelela. It&#x;s a showcase of Volpe&#x;s idiosyncratic sound &#x; that&#x;s his name on the album cover, his face in the promotional photos, his words in the press. I&#x;m interested in my music being recognized and sometimes, to do that, I have to put myself in the forefront, he says. Which I don't wanna do, really. I&#x;m not interested in being personally recognized, but for the music to be in the spotlight, sometimes I have to be, too.

Thanks to the fateful gift of a drum kit at age 6, Volpe found himself in demand at a young age. I played drums in a band and listened to alternative music &#x; just neighborhood kids trying to make our own songs, he says. In fifth grade he transitioned from Nirvana and Green Day to Busta Rhymes and Jay Z. The beats drew him to hip-hop ( I didn&#x;t really know what they were talking about at the time ), clams casino producer, and at 14 he began producing with a hardware sampler and digital recorder. Neither of his parents pursued music professionally, but their house, in Nutley, N.J., was full of equipment. My father played guitar in bands in high school and collects old amplifiers and samplers from the &#x;80s and stuff, he says. My mom doesn't play an instrument but I&#x;ve heard stories about when she was pregnant and would go to concerts with me.

InClams turned English singer Imogen Heap&#x;s voice inside out to create the beats for I&#x;m God and I&#x;m the Devil, both of which landed on Lil B&#x;s mixtape 6 Kiss and spawned scores of imitators. Two years later, in MarchVolpe released the first installment of a trilogy of beat mixtapes, Instrumentals, clams casino producer. At that time, he was living in his mom&#x;s house and finishing up his training to become a physical therapist&#x;until he caught his first check remixing and the clams casino producer changed. It was a big deal, he recalls. Five-hundred bucks for a beat I had laying around.

In addition to www.enthralaviation.comA$AP, Volpe worked on Mac Miller&#x;s debut album, Blue Slide Park, that year, along with the Weeknd&#x;s third mixtape, Echoes of Silence. He also released an EP of instrumental electronica on the esoteric but influential indie label Tri-Angle Records.

Witness - Clams Casino

32 Levels is his first official solo project since the Rainforest EP, and its title comes from a lyric on Lil B&#x;s I&#x;m God. It&#x;s both the culmination of the relationships Volpe clams casino producer over the Chavin it Large slot free demo game five-plus years, and the start of a new chapter&#x;the one that puts Clams Casino front and center.

Clams is one of the most interesting producers I've met, Vince Staples tells Complex. He's able to draw inspiration from anything and morph it to fit the character of the artist he&#x;s working with.

Flexible as Volpe may be, 32 Levels is unified by the unmistakable sound of a Clams Casino beat. The idea came from working on other artists&#x; albums and making songs that were really good but stuck out too much to fit on their projects, Volpe says. My music is very distinctive; it doesn't fit in everywhere.

On Jan. clams casino producer of this year, the attention-shy Volpe did something out of character and tweeted at singer Jhene Aiko and her frequent producers Fisticuffs, accusing them of jacking his sound on her song B&#x;s and H&#x;s. You guys have no shame about this? At all? he wrote. On Feb. 6, he responded to a Twitter user&#x;s question about the situation, writing, @JheneAiko had her in-house producers remake my beat because they didn&#x;t wanna pay me. But Volpe refrains from elaborating on the situation to Complex. Whatever is out there on Twitter, that&#x;s it, he says. I don't want to go into her business or my business in anymore detail.

The episode is the dilemma of approaching celebrity in miniature. On the one hand, clams casino producer, Volpe&#x;s confident enough to step into the public arena and out sheisty behavior. But when asked to discuss the event, he&#x;s reluctant and evasive. He&#x;s not comfortable as a headline-making star but he&#x;s not going to quietly lurk while someone presumably tries to play with his money. Remember, Stand and Deliver Slots Machine his name and image on the album cover now; the stakes are higher. 32 Levels works because I&#x;m the singlethingthat makes it cohesive, he says, allowing himself a brief moment of ego before retreating back to conversation of his work.

If he continues like this, moving between the spotlight and the shadows, where does he see himself in ten years? "I don't know," he says, after a long pause. "Doing things I wouldn't even expect right now. Things I can't even think about."
