Sometimes though, between the flashing lights and excitement of riches, it can be hard to keep all those casinos straight.
Confusing things even further, the state of Minnesota has some strange casino regulations, where most casinos are split between &#;mostly slot machines&#; and &#;mostly card games&#; but for whatever reason, the two are rarely combined.
Thankfully, I&#;ve thought back on all my trips to the local casinos, reached out to some much more experienced gambling friends of mine, and finally, put together a definitive list of the closest and best casinos near Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The 5 Main &#;Twin Cities&#; Casinos
Around Minneapolis & St. Paul, there&#;s a couple casinos that are so close to the metro area that us locals have adopted them as our own.
These casinos are essentially located in Twin Cities suburbs, and many feature a drive that rivals the morning commute of many Minnesotans.
1. Mystic Lake
Distance from Minneapolis: 35 minutes
It&#;s no surprise that Mystic Lake is probably the most popular casino near Minneapolis. With a massive , square foot gaming floor and an attached room hotel, Mystic Lake is the largest casino in all of Minnesota.
Gambling here features a staggering 4, slot machines and hundreds of blackjack tables, which range from $1 minimum to $1, max, plus bingo and pull tabs.
There&#;s also multiple restaurants, bars, showrooms, and even an attached golf course.
Location wise, the casino couldn&#;t be more convenient for Minneapolis locals and visitors. The casino sits a short 35 minute drive southwest of the cities. And for those who can&#;t be bothered to drive, Mystic Lake even runs a free bus service from the Twin Cities to the casino each day, with the most popular pickup spot being the Mall of America.

2. Little Six Casino
Distance from Minneapolis: 30 minutes
Little Six Casino is Mystic Lake&#;s sister property, located just a mile down the street from Mystic Lake. (There&#;s a free shuttle that runs between the two properties.)
In many ways, Little Six offers an opposite experience to its big brother. This smaller casino features just a handful of blackjack tables and far fewer slots, but some visitors prefer the more laid back vibe.

3. Canterbury Park
Distance from Minneapolis: 30 Minutes
Canterbury Park is a horse racing track and casino located just 30 minutes south of Minneapolis in the cool small town of Shakopee, MN.
The main draw here is arguably the live horse racing and gambling, but Canterbury also features an impressive casino. While you won&#;t find any slot machines here, you will find one of Minnesota&#;s most impressive collections of table games, including tons of Blackjack, Texas Hold&#;em, Baccarat, and other poker tables.
Canterbury is also notable in being one of the only smoke-free casinos in Minnesota. And for what it&#;s worth, most of my more serious gambling friends say Canterbury is their favorite casino near the Twin Cities.
4. Running Aces
Distance from Minneapolis: 30 Minutes
Running Aces is another live horse racing track and casino, located just 30 minutes north of Minneapolis.
Like Canterbury, you won&#;t find any slot machines, but you might not miss them. As the name implies, Running Aces includes plenty of live horse racing and card games. Those card games include tons of blackjack options and various poker games, but you can even find bingo and comedy shows here.
Running Aces is another one of the rare smoke-free casinos in Minnesota, which I consider to be a positive.

5. Treasure Island Resort
Distance from Minneapolis: 50 Minutes
Treasure Island is about an hour south of the Cities, just outside the scenic small town of Red Wing, MN.
Treasure Island markets itself around the Twin Cities as a &#;Resort & Casino&#; and that resort part is pretty accurate. At Treasure Island, you&#;ll find plenty to keep you busy even if you&#;re not gambling.
There&#;s an indoor water park, a family-friendly arcade, a lane bowling alley, nine bars and lounges, and even a mini-cruise line that will take you on scenic rides up and down the Mississippi River. Oh, and don&#;t forget the live entertainment, both in the 3, seat indoor venue and the 16, seat outdoor space.
As far as the casino, you&#;ll find slots-galore, with over 2, different slot machines. There&#;s also a modest collection of table games, including blackjack and poker, as well as bingo and pull tabs.
6 Casinos Within a Short Day Trip from Minneapolis & St. Paul
If you&#;re willing to drive a little further, there&#;s a bunch of other casinos located around northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.
At just an hour or two away, these make for a fun day trip. That said, pretty much all of these options have attached hotels, so crashing overnight is an easy convenience, too.
1. St. Croix Casino Turtle Lake
Distance from Minneapolis: 1 hour 30 minutes
Anybody from the Twin Cities who&#;s ever driven to Northwest Wisconsin has probably passed St. Croix Casino in Turtle Lake. That big bright logo, complete with its cheery green turtle, always does its best to wave passerby into the casino floor.
If you ever do stop in, you&#;ll find a somewhat divey casino packed with a variety of games. Of course, there&#;s slots, blackjack, and poker. But one notable part about Turtle Lake&#;s casino? It&#;s one of the only places to play Roulette in the area. Not that silly electronic version, either. But the live, real deal!
Oh, and Craps, too!
2. Grand Casino Hinckley
Distance from Minneapolis: 1 hour 20 minutes
Part of the Grand Casino family, this Hinckley location is just over an hour north of Minneapolis. Getting there couldn&#;t be simpler &#; just hop on 35 North and keep driving until you reach Hinckley. The casino, and its room attached hotel, is right off the exit.
The focus at this casino is slots, with over 2, different machines. Grand Casino Hinckley also includes a small handful of blackjack tables, bingo, and pull tabs.
You&#;ll also find an attached arcade, golf course, and concert/show arena.

3. Grand Casino Mille Lacs
Distance from Minneapolis: 1 hour 40 minutes
Mille Lacs Lake is one of the largest and most popular lakes near the Twin Cities, and as the name implies, Grand Casino Mille Lacs sits right near that lake.
While the casino is not technically on the water, and instead sits across the street, it&#;s certainly close enough that a trip could be combined into some sort of lake get-away.
In any case, Grand Casino Mille Lacs features thousands of slot machines and a small collection of blackjack tables. There&#;s also bingo, pull tabs, and on-site entertainment, including an arcade and concert venue.

Black Bear&#;s story hotel casino opened in It sits just two hours North of the Twin Cities and 20 minutes south of Duluth.
Here, you&#;ll find thousands of slot machines, a small collection of blackjack and poker tables, and bingo. The hotel also includes a 30, square foot event center and a nightclub/cabaret space.
5. Fond-du-Luth Casino
Distance from Minneapolis: 2 hours 20 minutes
Sure, this place is kind of tiny. Sure, you might see pan-handlers in front of the strange downtown Duluth location. But regardless, the fact that the blue-collar shipping town of Duluth features its own casino is pretty darn cool.
This means you can enjoy all the things to do along the North Shore during the day, rewind at one of the many up and coming Duluth breweries or distilleries in the evening, and then gamble the rest of your night away, right in town.
Gambling here is almost entirely slots, with approximately machines.

This first pick also has plenty of history. It first opened in as a riverboat casino. Indeed, the main casino floor was located on a docked riverboat! However, this casino underwent serious renovations in and now has more “classic” looking casino premises (although Harrah&#;s Metropolis is still pretty close to the Ohio River).
Located in Illinois, this casino is a relatively small establishment compared to many of the retail or brick-and-mortar casinos you can find in Las Vegas. But it offers a lot of excellent gambling activities fitted within its small size.
For instance, Harrah&#;s Metropolis includes about slot machines and over video poker machines. Enthusiasts of these games will find a lot to like here. But there&#;s also a variety of table games, including 21 different varieties of blackjack, roulette, mini-baccarat, 3-card poker, craps, and more. The casino even has a small poker room for dedicated games and occasional tournaments.
But that&#;s not all. Harrah&#;s Metropolis is also home to three restaurants, including a table service restaurant and a buffet for late-night gambling enthusiasts. Additional amenities include a bar that includes live music played on weekends, a hotel with separate hotel rooms, and more.

Next on the list is Tropicana Evansville, which is the second closest casino to Nashville and located in Indiana. It&#;s also a relative newcomer to the casino scene, having opened in From Nashville, it&#;s only about a two-and-a-half-hour drive away. Like Harrah’s Metropolis, it used to be a riverboat casino. It was transformed into a land-based establishment when Indiana&#;s gaming law changed.
The new premises? A 75, square-foot building with a whopping 45, ft.² space dedicated to the casino alone. Within this space, Tropicana includes over slot machines, a dedicated poker room, and 30 extra table games on top of all that. Since sports betting is legal within Indiana borders, hop on over to William Hill&#;s sportsbook, which is housed in this casino.
In addition to the casino activities and gambling arenas, the Tropicana comes with a room hotel, a handful of restaurants and bars, plus a conference space and extra entertainment venues. Want something else? You can head down to just outside Louisville, Kentucky, where you’ll find this Caesars casino sitting right on the banks of the Ohio River. It’s still in Indiana, of course, but it gets a lot of traffic from all three states since it’s close to so many borders.
This is also one of the largest casinos in the area, featuring over , ft.² of casino space that takes just over three hours to reach by car if you were to leave from Nashville.
There&#;s a lot to like here, and not just the additional space compared to the above two options. For instance, this Caesars-brand establishment features over slot machines and video poker games. In addition, gambling enthusiasts can check out 87 table games that span the classics, including craps, blackjack, mini-baccarat, roulette, and much more.
We also really like that this casino comes with a table poker room, plus a spacious sportsbook so sports betting enthusiasts can also find something to entertain themselves with here. A room hotel and a whopping seven restaurants round out the casino experience, making this one of the best casinos for long-term stays due to the wide array of activities available.
It’s nestled in green forest country as well, so it’s a pretty agreeable spot year-round. Music City residents (and Tennessee residents in general) would do well to make the over 3-hour drive to visit this Caesars casino, as it’s the largest and most expensive they are likely to find within a reasonable driving time.
Horseshoe Tunica Hotel and Casino

Last, but certainly not least, is this 63, ft.² casino located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It’s a bit of a drive from Nashville and other parts of Tennessee. However, the trip is worthwhile if you can stand the journey.
For instance, it features 10 poker tables (decent for a midsize casino), 70 gaming tables, and over slot and video poker machines. The casino games here are mostly classic card games like Texas Hold &#;Em and blackjack. However, you can also find games like roulette and Let it Ride.
This casino is perhaps best enjoyed by those looking for a well-rounded casino or resort experience. It includes a room hotel and six restaurants in total. Most of these offer sit-down, classic dining experiences, though a buffet is included as well for late-night casino-goers.
But this casino also includes a separate bar, a fitness center, and a golf driving range. This is one of the few casinos relatively close to Nashville that offers golfing as an activity. Add to that the aforementioned scenic environment on the banks of the Mississippi River. Horseshoe Tunica is a good pick for many.
The Palace Casino Resort

If you’re amenable to driving a little longer from Nashville, or if you’re closer to the southern border of Tennessee, you might consider checking out the Palace Casino Resort in Mississippi. It’s quite a long drive away, located at the southern tip of Mississippi, but the experience is well worth it in the end.
The Palace Casino Resort is a decently sized establishment that may not come close to the size of Caesars, but it still boasts over 38, ft.² of gaming space alone.
Within this space, Palace Casino includes over slot and video poker machines as well as 30+ table games. It&#;s open 24 hours a day, whereas most casinos near Nashville are not. Available table games include roulette, blackjack, craps, 3-card poker, and Mississippi Stud.
It’s a really nice casino if you want to spend a few days away from it all and treat yourself to a mini vacation. That’s because it includes a room hotel, two bars, five restaurants, and, most importantly, a full-service spa for all guests. Thus, this casino is a perfect place to unwind and enjoy some of your favorite casino games at the same time. An additional hour fitness center is included so you can keep up with your exercise routine.

The greater Los Angeles area has 5 counties, 18 million people, square miles of land, and one casino.
To clarify, we’re talking about casinos with slot machines.
There are several nearby cardrooms in Los Angeles, however they are just cardrooms only. What makes it confusing is that many of these cardrooms have the word “casino” in their name.
However we’re just focusing here on the closest more traditional casino to L.A. – one with slots, craps, and the like. Per California law, cardrooms are different entities, are not allowed to have slot machines, video poker machines, or craps and roulette.
That being the case, there is one casino near Los Angeles.
It’s the spacious Yaamava’ Resort & Casino (formerly the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino), east of L.A. in Highland, in San Bernardino County. It’s an Indian casino on tribal land situated sixty-three miles due east of downtown Los Angeles.

With 6, slot machines, plus table games, and , square feet of casino floor space, Yaamava is one of the largest casinos in the United States, and the biggest of the 25 casinos in Southern California.
There are some quirks with tribal gaming. Although the casino is open 24 hours a day, alcohol service stops at AM. In addition, the craps game that runs during normal times is card-based, rather than determined by a dice toss (although the odds are the same). There is no longer a poker room here either.
Among the array of 6, slots are seemingly every machine you’d want to play: mechanical reels games, video reels, progressives and more. Among these are Blazin’ Gems, Buffalo gold, Colossal Diamonds, Dragon Link, Dollar Storm, Monopoly Money Grab, and more.
In addition to all the video poker machines at bar tops, Yaamava spreads video poker machines on the casino floor.
“The Vault,” on the second level is one of five high-limit rooms, and has an entrance that looks something out of a starship from a Star Wars movie. It boasts a bar and 18, square feet – more than many casinos! There’s an even more exclusive, private high-limit room with private entries so that the high-roller or celebrity won’t get photographed by the rest of us mere mortals.
Table game options include tons of black jack tables (and many variants like Blazing 7’s), pai gow, EZ Baccarat, Three-card poker, and electronic versions of many table games. In normal times, roulette and California card craps games run.
Yaamava Casino Hotel Restaurants& Bars
With over 8 million visitors a year, you can imagine the restaurant demand here. Yaamava satisfies this demand with seven restaurants (not including the food court).
These include Hong Bao Kitchen, The Pines Modern Steakhouse, the always busy and popular Serrano Vista Cafe, Just Barbecue, and Rock & Brews, (among others). The popular Serrano Buffet re-opened in December after being closed since the start of Covid.
TuTu’s Food Court, has seating for , and gives you quick bite options from burgers to pizza to the Thai Chi Express Asian fusion to a grab and go bakery option.
You’ll find eight bars scattered throughout the property – most with table top games. Alcohol is only available from 5 PM to AM on weekdays, and from 8 AM to AM on Saturday and Sundays.
Yaamava Hotel
Also opening in December was the Yaamava’s brand new room, 17 story hotel tower.
The new tower was part of the resort’s massive $ million dollar that, (in addition to the hotel), included an expansive pool complex, spa, shopping, and a 2, seat entertainment venue.
Unlike at many Las Vegas Strip properties, parking at the Yaamava is free at all of their 5, parking spaces.

The Yaamava Resort & Casino at San Manuel is the closest casino with slot machines to the vast majority of towns in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.
However there are two other casinos within a mile radius of downtown Los Angeles.
Cities well to the south (Mission Viejo), or to the north (Oxnard), do have some closer options, which we’ll cover below.

Distance from Minneapolis: 35 minutes
It&#;s no surprise that Mystic Lake is probably the most popular casino near Minneapolis. With a massive , square foot gaming floor and an attached room hotel, Mystic Lake is the largest casino in all of Minnesota.

Next door to the Golden Nugget, the L’Auberge matches its neighbor in size and amenities.
The hotel consists of just over 1, rooms, and – like the Golden Nugget – the casinos near my location has its own 18 hole golf course, along with a big concert venue.
L’Auberge has 8 restaurants, casinos near my location, ranging from Favorites Southern Kitchen to Daiquiris & Dogs, Drago’s Seafood Restaurant and more. The property also boasts 4 bars, retail shops, pools, casinos near my location, spa, arcade, and even a barber shop.

Formerly the Isle of Capri, Caesars Entertainment has re-branded the resort and is currently in the process of remodeling/updating the entire property, which has been closed since due to both Covid and damage from Hurricane Laura.
A fall opening date is expected for the Horseshoe. Caesars is replacing the former riverboat with a 60, square foot land-based casino that is a full 1/3rd larger than the old Isle of Capri. The new casino will have around 1, slot machines, numerous table games, along with a ten table World Series of Poker, poker room and Caesars sportsbook.
The former Inn at the Isle has been demolished, but the existing, remaining tower will feature newly renovated rooms. The property will also have a Brew Brothers taproom.
The property sits right on the shores of Lake Charles, just north of the other two resorts, casinos near my location. At miles away it is the closest of the big three casinos to Houston. (But only by two miles).

If you want to get technical, the closest casino to Houston is one of the slot-only joints found off of I on the way to Lake Charles. The biggest among them is the Delta Downs Racetrack/Casino Hotel in Vinton, Louisiana.
I only don’t count it as the closest casino because it doesn’t have any table games, and I love to play table games.
If you’re OK with just slots however, you’ll find this Boyd Gaming casino to be far different that the little slot-only joints that you’ll find along I and in Lake Charles.
First off, it has a spacious room hotel, several dining options, (from the Rosewater Grill & Tavern to the Gator Grill), bars, pool complex, and an events center.

Delta Downs is miles away from downtown Houston. Google Maps indicated it would take you between 1 hour 40 minutes (during slow traffic times) up to 2 and ½ hours to drive there.
