Every helipad, permanent or temporary, is built around the same core zones. Understanding them is the first step in assessing whether your site is suited to one.

H APPROACH / DEPARTURE PATH WINDSOCK SAFETY AREA
TLOF — Touchdown & Lift-Off Area

The inner surface the helicopter actually lands on. Sized to the largest helicopter category the site is intended to serve.

FATO — Final Approach & Take-Off Area

The defined area over which the final approach and initial climb are completed, surrounding the TLOF.

Safety Area

An additional buffer around the FATO, kept clear of obstacles, personnel, and parked vehicles during operations.

Approach & Departure Path

An obstacle-free corridor for the helicopter's climb and descent — the single biggest site-selection constraint.

Classification

Ground-level or elevated.

The right classification depends on available land, existing structures, and how the site will be used.

TYPE 01

Ground-Level Helipad

Built directly on open land, with the FATO and TLOF at ground level. Typically the most straightforward and cost-effective option where land is available.

  • Suited to open plots, factory grounds, resort estates
  • Generally simpler ground preparation and drainage
  • Approach/departure paths easier to keep obstacle-free
TYPE 02

Elevated / Rooftop Helipad

Built on a reinforced rooftop or elevated platform, where ground space isn't available. Common for hotels and urban commercial buildings.

  • Requires structural load-bearing assessment of the building
  • Additional fire safety and emergency egress planning
  • Often the only viable option in dense urban sites
Standards & Safety

Built to a real standard.

Helipad construction and operation in India fall under DGCA regulations (Civil Aviation Requirements, Section 4 — Aerodrome Standards & Air Traffic Services). Exact requirements vary by site and helicopter category, and are confirmed during consultation — the fundamentals below apply broadly.

MARKING
A clearly marked "H" on the TLOF, sized and colored per standard, visible from the air in daylight and, where applicable, at night.
LIGHTING
Perimeter lighting for any helipad intended for night operations, plus obstruction lighting on nearby structures where required.
WINDSOCK
A windsock positioned for clear visibility from the approach path, giving pilots real-time wind direction on final approach.
SURFACE
A load-bearing, slip-resistant surface rated for the intended helicopter category, with adequate drainage.
OBSTACLES
Approach and departure paths kept clear of trees, structures, and overhead lines — assessed as part of site feasibility.
FIRE SAFETY
On-site firefighting equipment appropriate to the helipad's classification and expected traffic volume.
